The Answers: -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.

Can I use the native soil as bedding and backfill ?
Yes, as long as it provides sufficient support for the pipe to withstand the design loadings.

2.

Can I use TYTON-LOK gaskets in above ground applications?

Tyco Water does not recommend TYTON-LOK gaskets for use above ground.  The TYTON-LOK gasket is a friction restrained joint and the long-term effect of cyclical movements can be gradual joint separation to the point that the seal on the gasket bulk is compromised.  Sources of cyclical movements include vibration as may be found on bridge crossings.

3.

How does the Restrained Joint System compare with thrust blocks ?
In most situations the cost of constructing concrete anchor blocks is similar to the cost of TYTON LOK gaskets. The saving is in the speed that restrained joint pipelines can be installed and tested. Space savings can also be a big factor.

4.

Why do we sleeve DICL pipe ?
Polyethylene sleeving provides corrosion protection in aggressive soils by creating a passive uniform environment around the pipe and limiting oxygen exposure.

5.

Where are DICL pipes made ?
At the Tyco Water ISO 9000 accredited pipe plant at Yennora, Sydney.

6.

How long are DICL pipes ?
TYTON Joint pipe has a 5.5 metre effective laying length.
Flanged pipes have a maximum face to face length of approximately 5.35 metres.

7.

What is the lead time for supply of DICL pipe ?

Generally pipes can be supplied ex stock, but can be 1-2 months for large projects.

8.

Are DICL pipe and fitting ends compatible with PVC ?
Yes, if Series 2 uPVC to AS1477.

9.

How is DICL pipe joined ?
RRJ (TYTON) or flanged or by gibault at cut-ins or terminations.

10.

What should I do if I can't achieve or maintain the specified Field Test Pressure?
Cause: entrapped air or leakage. Depressurise, settle (24hr) and bleed the line. If retest fails, leak is likely. Consider sonics. Check/retighten all mechanical couplings, gibaults, valves etc. If retest fails, identify leak by consecutively halving the section and testing again.

11.

What do I do with a leaking joint ?
Check that a gasket has been installed, check joint deflection, correct deflection angle if necessary. If still leaking, drum the joint under pressure to dislodge grit. If still leaking notify Tyco Water. Claims of faulty product are subject to in situ inspection by Tyco Water.

12.

What friction loss formula and loss coefficients do I use?
Tyco Water recommends the Colebrook-White formula and for new pipe k=0.01.  Biofilms may increase this to 0.03 and greater.  Local conditions and experience should be considered.  For sewage rising mains k=0.06 is recommended, regardless of lining material type due to biofilm build up.

13.

Are cracks in cement mortar lining acceptable ?
Shrinkage is normal in cement mortar lining. Any such shrinkage should be checked to ensure it complies with appropriate product standards. Cracks will normally close on submersion in water.

14.

What is the maximum recommended water velocity in cement mortar lined pipe ?
Cement mortar linings can endure peak velocities in the order of 8 m/s for short durations. Tyco Water recommend for optimum service life that velocities be limited to 4 m/s. Cavitation effects should be considered case by case, particularly at changes of direction or local sharp re-entrant vertices within the pipeline.

15.

Does the direction the sockets face in rubber ring joint pipelines matter?
No.

16.

What is "Competency Based Training" ?
Competency Based Training means that the attendee does not merely "get a tick" for attending a workshop. With CBT there is a formal assessment of practical skills, where appropriate, and underpinning knowledge at some time after the workshop workplace practice.

17.

Why should I get involved in Competency Based Training?
More and more employers and employees are seeing the benefits of, not only training for skills enhancement, but also recognising the existing skills and knowledge in the industry. Many also see the benefits of linking competencies to job rewards. The competencies are also accepted nationally by the National Utilities and Electrotechnology Industry Training Advisory Board.

18.

Do I have to go through training if I know how to install pipes?
No. You are deemed to be competent after assessment, not after attending the workshop. If you have experience, you may wish to go through a process known as RPL (recognition of prior learning). In this case, all that has to be undertaken is an assessment to achieve a statement of competence, competence is usually demonstrated after a combination of existing knowledge / skills, workshop learning and workplace practice.

19.

Do I get some form of qualification when I complete the training?
Yes. Each module qualifies as a short course, when competency is demonstrated, a Statement of Attainment is issued. On gaining all competencies for the Foundation Program, a Certificate I will be awarded.

Statement of Attainment for Water Industry NWP01 Certificate 1:

Unit of Competency NWP233A - Construct & install water distribution assets
Elements of Competency         - 01 - Plan and prepare for construction

                                                      and/or installation
"                         "                  - 02 - Construct and install distribution assets,

                                                      pipes and associated fittings
"                         "                  - 03 - Check work
"                         "                  - 04    Review, record and report work

20.

Is there a minimum number of employees required to attend from one company?
No. The use of regional centres, which draw on a "catchment" of surrounding Councils, means that there is no minimum numbers required to attend. As few as 1 or 2 employees can attend in conjunction with employees from other Councils or contractors.
